For those of us living in Loudoun County who like to shop at the Whole Foods Market stores in Reston or Fairfax, the company has confirmed it has leased space to build a store in Ashburn. Let's hope it will open in early 2015.

To that I say: Thank you! But it’s about time!  I think they have waited for too long to serve Loudoun County, one of the wealthiest per-capita income counties in the country.

According to H&R Retail and Chain Store Age, plans are underway for a 40,000-square-foot store to “anchor” a new 100,000 square-foot development called the "Shops at Belmont." It will be wrapped around an existing small lake at the northwest corner of where Russell Branch Parkway intersects Claiborne Parkway, about one-half mile south of Leesburg Pike / Rte. 7.

The store will be situated just outside the Belmont Country Club gated community.  Claiborne Parkway is the southern extension of Lansdowne Boulevard, which feeds into the eastern edge of the Lansdowne on the Potomac community.  The average annual household income within 5 miles of the site is reportedly $132,000.

My guess is a LOT of homeowners in both of those communities and throughout Ashburn and Leesburg will shift their shopping for healthier and organic foods whenever this new Whole Food Market store opens.  It will compete with two Harris Teeter stores within two miles or so and a large Wegmans store just east of Leesburg.

Let’s just hope this store is more like the huge one in Fairfax which is the best Whole Foods Market I’ve ever shopped in throughout the DC area. The Reston store (see it's produce section in the accompanying photo) is in a cramped space in a commercial strip just east of the Reston Parkway.

Katie Mallow, a spokesperson for Whole Foods Market said "no two Whole Foods Market stores are exactly the same. Each if built to fit and work within its community's look, feel and needs. Our Ashburn location will be tailored to the local community both in design and features."
